A Message of Solidarity

A Message of Solidarity

At our School Committee Meeting on June 9, 2020, School Committee Chair Canter shared a message of solidarity with Black communities and every individual and educator fighting for equity and racial justice. This message is proudly shared below:

To the greater SK learning community,

I wanted to send a message to you about this moment and the racism that permeates every component of society. When George Floyd and Breonna Taylor were murdered an alarm was once again sounded that we must do something to address this deadly racism. The time is now.   Critical knowledge, radical empathy, and intentional action are non-negotiable. This is not a time for platitudes and distractions. This is a time for active anti-racism and nothing less.

I am committed to understanding racial disparities, the history of oppression, and the systematic ways even our most precious civic liberty, public education, has played into this narrative. We are committing to listening and to action. I plan to lead the School Committee towards action in order to ensure that every student, especially our most marginalized, is provided with the schools they deserve and the experiences that help them thrive in school.

I invite our BIPOC community members to the table, when you are ready. You’ve so often been refused a seat while your futures were largely predetermined by an archaic, racist system.  I am committed to working hard to make sure your voices and experiences are heard and lifted up.

To our BIPOC learners- You deserve a future that allows for love, hope, opportunity, and joy. You deserve to sing loudly and run freely. You deserve to be exactly who you are. The world needs you just as you are. Right now, the world doesn’t even deserve you. Black Lives Matter. Until the world feels that in their bones, we will march with you, and we will do everything we can to challenge racism that may exist within our school system.

Sincerely,

Stephanie R Canter, South Kingstown School Committee Chair
