SK Integrated Preschool - SKIP

ABOUT OUR PROGRAM

South Kingstown Integrated Preschool (SKIP) educates a diverse group of children, including those with and without disabilities or developmental delays. SKIP currently provides half-day preschool sessions for both 3 and 4-year olds.

As part of Wakefield Elementary School in the South Kingstown School Department, our program is aligned with the district kindergarten curriculum.  We have also established transition meetings with the SKSD school of entry when your child is ready for kindergarten. This collaboration between SKIP and the elementary schools makes for a smooth transition with a clear understanding of your child on day one of kindergarten.

All SKIP classrooms:

  • Are staffed by a Rhode Island Department of Education certified teacher and paraprofessional.

MISSION STATEMENT

It is the mission of SKIP to create a loving, nurturing, and productive environment, which respectfully embraces the value of each child, family, faculty member, and community partner. We maintain high expectations for all children, with the fundamental understanding that each child can learn given instruction which is built upon his or her unique strengths and learning style. By committing to put the needs of children first and to pool our resources as needed, we strive to assist each child in reaching his or her full potential during these precious and important early years.

What sets us apart...
-  Speech, Occupational, and Physical Therapy services are embedded within the school day to students who require such as part of their special education services.
-
Our School Psychologist and Social Worker are available to work with children and their families.
-
As part of the elementary school, we have access to a full-time nurse/teacher.

Play is the primary means by which children demonstrate early learning accomplishments. We have created a learning community that promotes literacy, effective communication, problem-solving, critical thinking, civic responsibility, and the skills necessary for living and working in a culturally diverse society.

South Kingstown Integrated Preschool has participated in the BrightStars quality assessment process and SKIP was awarded 4 out of 5 stars. SKIP was assessed across several quality standards and criteria including Health and Safety, Early Learning and Development, and Family Engagement. For further details regarding this rating, please visit www.BrightStars.org

SKIP is open to Community Peers, through a LOTTERY SYSTEM. A lottery ensures a fair and equitable system open to all South Kingstown families. The SKIP lottery is held at least once in the late winter/early spring for the upcoming school year. The call for applications to the lottery will be posted on the SKSD website, through the SK schools, and other local agencies that serve the interests of children. The number of SKIP seats available per year varies.  There is no waitlist.  Once a child has been randomly chosen through the lottery for the SKIP program, they are eligible to participate until they reach kindergarten age as long as payments are up to date and the enrollment process has been followed. Children who are 3-years-old before 09/01 (and have not turned 4) shall be eligible to attend AM sessions   8:53-11:33. Children who are 4-years-old before 09/01 (and have not turned 5) shall be eligible to attend the PM session: 12:33-3:13.

Here at SKIP, we work in partnership with our families   to foster a love of learning.  We recognize the role of   family members as crucial in their child’s development and encourage open and frequent communication.  Volunteer opportunities may be available within each classroom and with the elementary Parent Teacher Organization (PTO).

“…for children, play is serious learning. Play is the real work of childhood.”
