DLI Program Description

  • English SpanishWhat is Dual Language Immersion?

Our model is a second language immersion program that provides literacy and content instruction in two languages: English and Spanish.

Dual language programs differ from traditional world language programs in the instructional focus where traditional programs offer language instruction as a subject area, typically at the MS/HS levels.  Dual language immersion programs present information across multiple content areas through the language.

What Does SK's Dual Language Program look like?

  • The South Kingstown Dual Language Program offers a "50/50 Immersion Model" meaning the instructional time is divided between English and Spanish. An English-speaking certified teacher provides 50% of the instruction and a Spanish-speaking certified teacher provides 50% of the instruction.
  • The Dual Language Instruction (DLI) option begins in Kindergarten and is located at PDES and WKES.  Matunuck and WKES students would attend the program at WKES; Wakefield and PDES students would attend the program at PDES.  All South Kingstown students entering Kindergarten are eligible to participate in the DLI program and will be automatically enrolled in the DLI lottery unless the OPT-OUT choice is selected during the registration process..

    Program Goals
  • To create multiple entries points for South Kingstown students to enter into a world language course pathway beginning in either elementary, middle, or high school.
  • To develop a high level of proficiency in understanding, speaking, reading and writing in English and Spanish.
  • To develop cultural literacy.
  • To prepare students to perform at or above grade level in both languages.
  • To promote self-esteem and leadership skills.
  • To ensure preparedness for bilingual college and career options leading to employment in a global economy.
